The Figure 8 knot is extremely important and used all the time in rock climbing. Whether you're rock climbing outdoors or at an indoor climbing gym, it is essential that you know how to tie a Figure 8 knot. Most climbing gyms will require that you know this knot before they let you climb. The Figure 8 knot is relatively simple and can be practiced at home with any kind of rope.
Figure 8 Knot
Step 1: Pull out approximately 5 feet of rope and line it up straight.
Step 2: At the top of the rope section, twist the rope so that it makes a "P" shaped loop.
Step 3: Bring the end of the rope up past the loop and over the top.
Step 4: Pull the end of the rope through the loop. Make sure you go under the loop and come out over.
Step 5: Pull the end of the rope straight down. You may need to slide the knot up higher to have enough slack to tie into your harness.
Step 6: Pull the end of the rope through the bottom loop and around the top. Make sure you go over the loop and come out under.
Step 7: Pull the end of the rope back through the bottom loop. Make sure you go under the loop and come out over.
Step 8: Pull the end of the rope around the bottom and through the top loop. Make sure you go over the loop and come out under.
