The Figure 8 knot is extremely important and used all the time in rock climbing. Whether you're rock climbing outdoors or at an indoor climbing gym, it is essential that you know how to tie a Figure 8 knot. Most climbing gyms will require that you know this knot before they let you climb. The Figure 8 knot is relatively simple and can be practiced at home with any kind of rope.

Step 1: Pull out approximately
5 feet of rope and line it up
straight.
Step 2: At the top of the rope
section, twist the rope so that it
makes a "P" shaped loop.
Step 3: Bring the end of the rope
up past the loop and over
the top.
Step 4 - Figure 8 knot Step 5 - Figure 8 knot Step 6 - Figure 8 knot
Step 4: Pull the end of the rope
through the loop. Make sure
you go under the loop and come
out over.

Step 5: Pull the end of the rope
straight down. You may need to
slide the knot up higher to have
enough slack to tie into your
harness.
Step 6: Pull the end of the rope
through the bottom loop and
around the top. Make sure you
go over the loop and come
out under.

Step 7: Pull the end of the rope
back through the bottom loop.
Make sure you go under the
loop and come out over.

Step 8: Pull the end of the rope
around the bottom and through
the top loop. Make sure you
go over the loop and come out
under.
