Rock climbing is one of those unique sports that has different types or styles. A rock climber can select between various forms of climbing that require different techniques and skill sets. The most intriguing part is that each variation of rock climbing will offer a completely different experience.

Aid Climbing

Aid climbing is a type of rock climbing that requires either fixed or placed protection to advance upwards. The climber places equipment in the rock, attaches an aider (a ladder-like device) to the protection, and then stands up on the aider. This process is repeated until you reach the next pitch or the top of the route.

Bouldering

Bouldering is a type of rock climbing where you only climb 10-15ft. off the ground, without the use of ropes or protection. Bouldering primarily focuses on strength and power to climb short sequences. The advantage of bouldering is that it requires minimal equipment and allows the climber move from one route to the next without taking down gear.

Free Solo Climbing

Free solo climbing is any unprotected climb over 21 feet. The term unprotected means no ropes, harnesses, cams, nuts or any other climbing device.

Sport Climbing

Sport climbing is any climb where the route already has permanently placed protection, such as bolts and anchors. The climber will use quickdraws in order to "clip in" at various stages on the route.

Traditional Climbing

Traditional climbing is exactly the opposite of sport climbing. The route has no permanently fixed protection and it's the climber's discretion on whether or not to use passive protection, such as cams and nuts.
